The chart does help with discussion about noun/verb agreement and how the ending of words need to change based on the sentence we are saying or writing. I sometimes use chart paper to show students the steps. Many words can function as different parts of. Some modern grammars add others, such as determiners and articles. If you have color-coded your words, students can sometimes find words that are related by subject a bit easier. The parts of speech are classified differently in different grammars, but most traditional grammars list eight parts of speech in English: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Once students are more comfortable saying the words, challenge them to create a sentence that incorporates one noun and one verb from the wall. For example: indictment, suffragist, abolitionist. Some words they need to hear over and over before I can expect them to say them. When new words go on the wall, I like to spend a couple of days just saying them with the students. One year, my district required that all elementary teachers put up a word wall sorting words by every single phonics skill. Having a word wall that addresses specific phonics skills that students struggle with can be a huge benefit to them. However, teachers know better than anybody that we don’t live in an ideal world. In an ideal world, upper elementary students would already have all of their phonics skills down. Keeping the word wall top of mind with students will help ensure that they use it as a tool otherwise it is just wasted wall space.īelow are some of my favorite word wall ideas for upper elementary, focused on building vocabulary and decoding skills in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Ideally, by upper elementary - and especially 4th and 5th grade - word walls should be used to help improve student vocabulary or help them practice other word decoding strategies. While this word wall idea is useful for primary students, upper elementary students don't benefit as much from this type of word wall. By the time students enter 3rd grade, they have most likely had four years of alphabetized word walls designed to help them learn their sight words.
